The year is 1881. A friend has written to you from the village of Winterslow regarding the disappearance of children and a series of disturbing events emanating from the home of Lydia Shears, who many hold to be a practitioner of witchcraft. You have been summoned to investigate the case of the missing children and to resolve whatever situation you may discover. You arrive at the gates to the Shears estate on All Hallows' Eve. Pray you return before midnight...

All Hallows' Eve 1881 is a classic 80's-style text adventure for the 48k ZX Spectrum. You must navigate the Shears estate and use the various clues and items you find to solve the mystery of the missing children.

This is my first release for the ZX Spectrum. The game is designed to be accessible even for players new to the text adventure genre. All feedback is welcome!

Hi, I’m contacting you because I want to make a homebrew tribute USB. I’m collecting as many content creators as possible. I also want to include a profile for each one, with a few details, such as their logo, avatar, name, work completed, projects, etc., so you can see who’s behind their creations.

That profile, along with any material you allow me to upload, will be placed on a USB drive. This will act as a database of creators and their creations, and will be updated as I connect with new people.

The USB I’m thinking of creating will be one of those rubber-type USBs, shaped like a Spectrum computer, something that looks really nice. The idea is that those who contribute material, and if they want to buy one or more, will get it at cost price, and those who just want to buy one, it will cost a little more.

The idea is that if enough are sold, enough to recover the initial investment, the profits that the rest of the USBs could generate will be distributed among the people who have contributed material to the project, via transfer, PayPal, or however possible, even if possible, that the USB will be free. Obviously, you can buy more than one, but only one of them can be free.

It’s not necessary or mandatory to buy the USB, only if you like it or want it.

If you’re interested in this project, you can contact me at this email, flopping@gmail.com. If you have any questions or concerns, let me know and I’ll answer them. Do you think the idea is a good one? Would you like to participate in the project? Let me know. Best regards.

Juan.

Excellent game. (Limited inventory and time limit was a bit of hell. :-) )

Got my tape today in the mail. It's gorgeous!

Just finished the tape version.  That was short but sweet ) .

The only time I got properly stuck was the correct verbs to use with the fire and mirror.   adding 'douse' as well as 'pour water' may have helped.  For the mirror, "use" could be nice to add.. or "reflect <person>".. etc.

Thanks for making this and providing it as a tape via Cronosoft :-)

Thank you! For my next game, I've been working on making the parser more flexible.

This looks interesting. Did you use one of the existing tools for text adventures or you made your own system?

Hi, thanks for the comment. I coded this from scratch in C and it is my first attempt to create a text adventure. Recently I've been working on enhancing the code (parser, font size and colours etc) for my next game.

Thanks for your answer.

Hints for All Hallows' Eve 1881

  • To get through the gates at the beginning, you need to examine the flora and fauna.
  • The study contains a book that grants a clue on how to defeat the final enemy.
  • The dog loves his steak; Perhaps you should add a little "seasoning"?
  • Something used to be very attached to the well at the back of the mansion.
  • Is the door boarded up? Here's Johnny!
  • The fire in the lounge must be extinguished.
  • Make sure you are fully loaded before entering the crypt.

Does this work on modern systems?

Yes with an emulator

Thank you

Finally finished: good retro-styled scary text adventure, with everything like back in the days (a minimalistic parser and buzzer sounds too!).

Descriptions are simple and effective, the mansion easy to navigate and puzzles logical if a bit simple. There are a few things I have disliked (see: limited inventory, which forces backtracking — and this is a time limited game!), but all in all a solid production, hope to see more from the author.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I coded the game from scratch, but hope to build on the 'engine' for a future release and implement things like a better parser.

I am playing this and I think I am stuck: (spoiler ahead)

I have a revolver, but where do I find the bullets? I do not think I can kill the zombies otherwise.

Hi, thanks for playing! What items have you got/used?

  • steak nife
  • candle (lit)
  • box of matches
  • crucifix
  • hand mirror
  • pocket secateurs
  • revolver

I do not recall exactly what I have used, but I poisoned the dog, accessed the crypt (but cannot kill zombies), put off the fire, played the piano.

Have you found the spade?

Nope, not found the spade.

You need to look a bit harder in the basement, then ;)
